Roller Derby

Roller Derby Explained Roller Derby is a fast paced action packed sport. The game is known as a 'Bout' and these are then broken down into 2 minute 'Jams'. The game consists of two teams of four blockers (the defensive players) and one jammer (the point scorer) The game starts with all the blockers from both teams skating in a pack formation.

The Jammers then race through the pack dodging the opposition and using their own players to establish the 'Lead Jammer' status, there are no points scored on the initial pass. They then continue to race around the track and attempt to pass the pack again. The Jammers score one point for each member of the opposing team they pass. This can continue for up to two minutes or until the Lead Jammer calls off the jam (by tapping her hands on her hips) Sound easy? Well with any sport there are a set of rules and penalties which we all follow...

Here is a little sample -
  • No Tripping
  • No deliberate falling in front of other players
  • No back blocking (pushing from behind)
  • No using elbows
  • Arms should be bent, never fully extended to block players
  • No blocking 20 feet from the pack
  • No grabbing, holding or pulling of any opposing players
Breaking these rules will certainly earn you a trip to the penalty box leaving the opposing team an advantage! If a skater is in the penalty box and a Jammer from the opposing team passes her – she will still score a point. A Jammer can visit the penalty box for the same reasons as any other skater leaving a scoring opportunity for the other team. You might hear this being referred to as a Power Jam.

Here is a quick breakdown of the positions -
Jammer Helmet Jammer - The point scorer and usually the fastest skaters on the track, can be identified by the star on the side of the helmet.

Lead Jammer - The first Jammer to break through the pack, the lead jammer is able to call the Jam off at anytime.
Pivot Helmet Pivot - Pivots are usually the pace setters or communicators of the pack, they are identified with a stripe on their helmets.

Blocker - Along with the Pivot there are three blockers, blockers play both offensive and defensive strategies to assist their jammer which blocking the opposing jammer.
